Knot Just An Ordinary Cutoff T-shirt

Lately, I’ve been all into hand cut shirts. You’ve seen cut outs that look like something. A Skull or a Heart, shirts cut to make cover ups for the beach.

And now, another fun summer shirt, one that has been knotted to add a pretty touch to the bottom of a t-shirt – knot just an ordinary cutoff T-shirt.

It might look difficult to do, but really it’s just knotting. The key to any kind of knotting project is to be consistent. That means that you need to do the knot the same time every.single.time.

This knotting technique is a spin-off craft of the traditional macrame craft.

I first tie dyed this shirt, it was just a part of a batch of tie dyes that turned out pretty good.

Next, I cut off the neckline.

Then the hem.

And then each sleeve hem.

Give the neck and sleeves a pull and the fabric rolls into a little seam-like roll.

Next, you want to use a ruler and turn the shirt inside out. Mark a line straight across to make an even end line for your cuts. I used ink so you could see the line well. Pencil makes a nice light line and washes out.

Then cut up into the shirt, leaving about 1/2 inch between cuts so your pieces are evenly thick.

To start your knots. Take two pieces and tie them together.

Then, tie a second time to create a knot.

Again make sure you do this the same way for each knot.

Once you have knotted the whole bottom of the shirt, you will take a piece from each tie, and tie to the next tie.

AA          BB        CC

A     AB      BC      C

…kind of like the above letters referring to the knot. The A and C extras will be tied onto the next knotting to them.

Then it will be…

AA    BB    CC

A  AB   BC   C

AA  BB  CC

…again. You will knot the third row, taking one from the next tie and knotting them together.

Here is the shirt finished up close with the knots.

Of course, I stopped after three rows, you could knot more, and maybe even do the sleeves, if you want to really go for the extra.

  1. Chris says:

How long did you cut the strips?

    • cmiy says:

Hi Chris, I cut them at about 8 inches, but it’s really dependent on the fit of the shirt. I cut mine for allowed modesty for my minion.
      Thanks!
