Strawberry Pretzel Dessert Dip

Untitled - 2

I love to create new items with old standby recipes. This recipe has been a long time favorite in it’s old form, what was a summertime treat with a pretzel crust, cream cheese filling and a jello and fresh strawberry topping. I loved it the first time I tasted it, and I’m sure that even though that was years ago, that this dessert has been around much longer then my first taste. So I wanted to make this into a dessert that was a different style. I’ve been loving dips lately, and with all summer parties we attend it’s easy enough to transport this in a bowl with a bag of pretzels to dip it into. One big bonus about this dip is that the pretzels don’t get soggy and are perfectly salty and crunchy while you pick up your dreamy cream cheese filling and strawberries.

This dessert is lower in sugar then most desserts as well. I only use a little 1/4 cup of sugar in the filling, and just enough strawberry jam to coat the strawberries. You can use a sugar substitute and sugar free jelly to create a diabetic friendlier dessert.

Look at that, you can load your pretzel up with lots of the cream cheese filling, and make sure you get plenty of sweet strawberry chunks as well. That is a delicious bite right there! I made this recipe for my family as a dessert on the weekend, and they snarfed it down! I was shocked ( and so were they apparently…) at how good it was!

Begin first by chopping up about 15 strawberries, I liked the smaller size because it made it a little easier to scoop up the berries in the dessert.

In a microwave safe bowl, melt 1/4 cup of strawberry jam with 1 teaspoon of water, mix this well.

Stir well to mix the water well into the jam.

Now add the chopped strawberries and put to the side.

In a medium sized bowl, place sugar and cream cheese (softened).

Begin mixing the cream cheese and sugar with a hand mixer or stand mixer.

Once the cream cheese is combined with the sugar, add 1 teaspoon vanilla.

Next add container of cool whip topping and mix well.

Place your cream cheese mixture in your serving bowl.

Top with strawberries. I used a slotted spoon to put my strawberries on the cream cheese mixture so not to have as much runny jam. Refrigerate remaining leftovers.
